Twenty twenty-three marks a lot of landmarks for the Desert Foundation, including my seventieth birthday on May 2. In this month’s Fire and Light podcast, Tessa Bielecki and I explore the mystery of our lives’ stories. What does it mean when someone from Ireland says, “My story, your story”? Concrete details of the joys and sorrows in everyone’s unique life story have an uncanny power to communicate across time and cultures. We ponder the “concrete universal” and the meaning of “destiny” and the way each of our lives unfolds along enduring themes. These themes weave in and out over the years. We conclude with a meditation prompting you to celebrate your own destiny and the legacy you hope to leave for the next generations.
“Love After Love,” a poem by Derek Walcott, captures the spirit of this savory reflection. “The time will come,” he assures us, “When, with elation, / You will greet yourself arriving / At your own door, …” He invites us to “Sit. Feast on your life.” During the Easter season, when we celebrate the wonder of Resurrection that bursts out of suffering, loss, and injustice, we feast on the Life that is ours.
